    Pawleys Island
    Introduction

Pawleys Island, Litchfield and The Hammock Coast is made up of Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield, and Pawleys Island. The story goes that in 1889, a riverboat captain named Joshua John Ward, frustrated with how hot and sticky traditional naval hammocks were on the humid South Carolina coast, set out to make a more comfortable design for hammocks. His creation, the Pawleys Island Hammock, is still made and sold on Pawleys Island today.

Pawleys Island is a barrier island less than 4 miles long and mostly 1 house wide, separated from the mainland by a beautiful salt marsh and accessible by two short causeways. The ambiance is relaxed. The town speed limit is 25 mph, making it as safe as possible for the many users of the road. Night life consists of dining out, long conversations on screened porches, shopping in mainland boutiques or strolling the beach.

In addition to sunbathing and swimming along the beach in Pawleys Island you can find a limitless supply of activities. Water activities include shelling, surfing/bodyboarding, creek fishing and crabbing, kayaking, and biking.

Golf courses are plentiful and ready for anyone from a novice to an expert. Check out any of the 9 golf courses that are part of the Waccamaw Golf Trail.

Shopping at the Hammock Shops Village, the Village Shops and the Island Shops are a must. Walk through and visit the variety of specialty shops. Along the mainland you can find more boutiques and art galleries as well as major stores such as TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning and Chicos.

Dining in Pawleys Island is considered a foodie’s paradise. Weather eating at the only dining option on the island at the Seaview Inn to the extensive choices on the mainland. Fine dining at Bistro 217 or Gio’s to something more casual at bisQit or the Rustic Table. You can find bakeries and ice cream shops along Hwy 17 to help satisfy your sweet tooth.

There are numerous historic churches in Pawleys Island but do not miss visiting the Pawleys Island Chapel.

Bordering the Huntington Beach State Park to the north, and Pawleys Island to the South, Litchfield Beachis made up of gated communities, a few public access areas, and two fine resorts. Dining or golfing in Litchfield has a relaxed atmosphere. Runners, walkers, and cyclist can enjoy the safe 26-mile Waccamaw Neck Bikeway.
